HALO

“Architecture is the biggest unwritten document of history”

Frank Gehry

The 'Halo'. Proposal for an elevated walkway above Cathedral Square, Perth. It started with the metaphorical shape of an Halo. Unfortunately this initial design was going to go over the busy street St Georges Terrace and required some pylons to be placed in front of the Council House building across the road. Too big for such an iconic site in Perth.

The design was then reduced by applying a twist to the circular shape of the ‘Halo’: this generated an ‘Infinite’ symbol shape. This solution would have allowed the the sky-walk to be built within the Cathedral Square and it would have still offered a unique aerial perspective over the whole site.

Unfortunately the Infinity design was hovering over St Georges Cathedral and this fact made few people nervous. The only solution left was a vertical structure which would not block the view for people at ground level.

The ‘Hyperboloid’ was born: a spiral walkway to the sky.
